Welcome to our newest sponsor - The Charlotte Folk Society!
Music returns to the
Great Aunt Stella Center at 7:30 PM on Friday, August 8, when the Charlotte Folk
Society opens its 2008-2009 Gathering Concert Series with a bluegrass concert by
The Flowers Family Band and their special guests, the Little Family.
The Flowers Family has twice been invited to perform at MerleFest and the
Little Family is a long-time fiddlers convention favorite. The hour-long concert
will be followed by refreshments, jam sessions, and a song circle. All Folk
Society Gatherings are family-friendly, open to the public, and no cover.
Donations are always appreciated.
After 26 years of holding monthly
concerts and jam sessions on the Central CPCC Campus, the Charlotte Folk Society
was compelled to move when attendance outgrew venue capacity. The Great Aunt
Stella Center, a beloved downtown landmark, was originally designed as a church.
The former sanctuary offers a beautiful performance space with great acoustics
and seating for 400. Ample surface parking is available adjacent to the Stella
Center, with complimentary parking available after 7 PM in a nearby parking
deck. Visit www.folksociety.org for details.
On the silver and digital screens:
***Local Charlotte musician Mike Strauss composed the title song and soundtrack for the short documentary movie by Charlotte filmmakers Cristina Cassidy and Michael Kahn entitled "Stick it to me." The film is a look at bumper sticker culture, the people who display them and reactions they cause. It's scheduled to premiere on Saturday, September, 27th 2008 at 5pm at The Discovery Place in uptown Charlotte as part of The Charlotte Film Festival. more info: http://www.charlottefilmfestival.org * http://www.mikestruass.net
***Local actor, music supporter and photographer Stephen Rogers can be seen in an upcoming episode of One Tree Hill! The episode is "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and should air on Monday, September 22, 2008.
***Ben Best (Pyramid) has been busy writing and acting in a variety of movies himself. Check out his credits at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0078897
***Our good friend and frequent Charlotte performer Sadler Vaden (Leslie) just returned from the LA screening of "Tropic Thunder" (starrring Ben Stiller, Jack Black & Robert Downey, Jr.). Sadler was the lead guitarist with The Mooney Suzuki who played the band (uh huh) at a big party. Unfortunately that scene got cut from the big screen, but will be shown on the director's cut when it's released on DVD. Speaking of Leslie - their new ROCK CD is almost complete. Details forthcoming. http://www.myspace.com/leslierock
Misc News, Events & Announcements:
***Charlotte Pop Fest will return! After
raising nearly $2,000 for The World Vision: Sponsor a Child charity, they are planning
another 2-day event for next Summer 2009. In the meantime, make plans to attend
a mini pop fest, on Saturday, December 13, 2008, to raise money (& holiday
spirits) for a local Charlotte-area charity. Bands scheduled to perform are:
James Deem, Ed James, Steve Caraway, gogoPilot, The Stellas, Transmission
Fields, Crisis, Cool King Chris and Matt Cheezem. More details at http://www.charlottepopfest.com
***The Dell Lounge presents the Austin City Limits Music Festival Sound and the Jury contest - an online battle of the bands that will score one winner a slot at the ACL Festival stag. Entering the contest from Charlotte is our own Transmission Fields. It only takes a moment to vote - no registration is required - and they'd really appreciate it. This is another way we can put the Charlotte music scene on the map, so please stop by http://www.transmissionfields.com which will redirect you to the voting site.
