Event Alert

THE LEGENDARY EARL SCRUGGS WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS IN CHARLOTTE, NC ON SATURDAY, APRIL 11

Renowned Originator of Three Finger Style Banjo and North Carolina Native, Brings Legendary Live Performance to Charlotte For One Night Only Performance

Presented by John Boy & Billy “The Big Show” and Knee-Deep In Bluegrass

Atlanta, Georgia (March 18, 2009) – Earl Scruggs, world-renowned innovator of the "Scruggs-Style Picking" on the 5-string banjo and bluegrass pioneer is performing at the Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday, April 11 beginning at 8 p.m. Recently coming off a GRAMMY Nomination by The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences for "Best Bluegrass Album" for The Ultimate Collection / Live At The Ryman, Earl Scruggs with Family & Friends will be performing their classics in this return back to their home state. Tickets for the event are available for $26 - $46.50 and can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com or through the Ovens Auditorium Box Office.

Growing up near Shelby, North Carolina, an area known for its strongholds of banjo enthusiasm, Earl began playing the banjo at the age of four using a two finger style picking. Growing up on a farm during the Depression Era, Scruggs' development of his banjo skills was entirely self taught, not even so much as owning a radio until his teens to influence his style. At age ten, he developed a style utilizing three fingers that was to become known as "Scruggs-Style Picking." His style of playing, previously unheard outside the surrounding North Carolina area, is now credited with re-inventing the instrument due to the talent and prominence Earl Scruggs gave to the instrument. While a member of Monroe's Blue Grass Boys, he met singer/guitarist Lester Flatt, with whom he would start Flatt & Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys in 1948. The group became the most prominent band in bluegrass history and made popular this sound to millions of listeners with their theme to the enduring TV series The Beverly Hillbillies, "The Ballad of Jed Clampett." Scruggs also wrote and recorded the instrumental "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" that was used throughout the movie Bonnie and Clyde. A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the North Carolina Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame—Scruggs even has his own Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He holds an Honorary Doctorate of Music presented by the renowned Berklee College of Music, and is a 2008 recipient of the prestigious GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ovens Auditorium is located at 2700 East Independence Blvd. in Charlotte, North Carolina. Contact Ovens at 704.372.3600, or visit www.ovensauditorium.com
